Mekren's was born in Nadur in 1899 and has stayed a family bakery ever since. Here, on the quiet island of Gozo, the dough is still slow-proofed, the ingredients still come from local farms, and every ftira is still baked in the traditional wood-fired oven that gives it its unmistakable character.
It's the spot locals pass on the way to Ramla Bay, and the reason travellers cross the channel hungry. Nothing about the way we bake here has changed in over a century — and that's exactly the point.
